The City of Hickory was awarded $400,000 in EPA Brownfield Grants for assessment of petroleum and hazardous substance Brownfield properties in 2008. The City hired environmental consultant Hart & Hickman to manage daily grant activities.
Grant funds are being used to inventory and prioritize Brownfields sites, conduct community outreach activities, perform Phase I and II environmental site assessments (ESA), and develop reuse plans for sites in Hickory.
The City has completed four Phase I ESAs and one Phase I ESA update. One additional Phase I ESA is currently being conducted. The properties assessed include the former Piedmont Wagon property, former Moretz Mill property, former Hollar Hosiery Mill, former Elliot Knitting Mill and Piedmont Foundry & Machine Company property, former Regal Manufacturing property, and the former S&W Chemical property.
Phase II ESAs have been completed at the former Hollar Hosiery Mill and Former Piedmont Wagon properties, and a Phase II ESA is currently being conducted at the former Regal Manufacturing property. Additional Phase II ESAs are planned for other properties.
